CFP: (Re-)mediating the Unconscious

Gramma: Journal of Theory and Criticism
CFP: Volume 30 (2023)

Edited by Maria Poulaki (Aristotle University) & Adriano D’Aloia (University of Bergamo)

Deadline for abstract proposals: November 15, 2023

Screen media and notably cinema have been linked, in theory as well as in the cultural imagination, with non-conscious and preconscious states, as well as with shifts in consciousness. From the early association of cinema with hypnosis, to the 1950s debate over “subliminal messages” contained in advertising, film and other media, the way media can attune to what rests beneath the level of conscious awareness remains an area of intense popular as well as theoretical fascination. The scholarly study of cinema has addressed and cultivated the relation between the medium and the unconscious – from Benjamin’s association of film with the “optical unconscious” in the 1930s, to the sweeping influence of psychoanalysis on film theory in the 1970s, connecting cinema with …

Elephant & Castle. Laboratorio dell’immaginario, 28, 2022
A cura di/Edited by/Sous la direction de Adriano D’Aloia & Jacopo Rasmi

We now live in the Mediacene, a geological era characterized by the crucial impact of technologies of  perception, information and transport on the historical and environmental context in which we live. Having become real living environments, the contemporary media are regulators of a multimodal sensitivity on which our awareness of the challenges and pitfalls of the now full-blown ecological crisis depends. This Elephant & Castle issue offers some food for thought on the current state of the discourse on media ecology, in search of a new ecosystemic paradigm for describing the relationship between living beings and the planet.

Cinema, evoluzione, neuroscienze.

Gestalt Filmology. Insights on Form and Embodiment in the Film Experience

Cinéma & Cie. Film and Media Studies Journal, 38, 2022
Edited by Adriano D’Aloia and Ian Verstegen

Recent advancements in the encounter between media studies and the cognitive sciences raises the possibility of re-launching some of the assumptions of Gestalt psychology as productive insights for film theory, analysis, and criticism. ‘Gestalt Filmology’ would be a body of knowledge taking hints from Rudolf Arnheim’s pioneering film theory but anchored in core Gestalt ideas about the multimodal functioning of the senses, motion and ego-perception and resulting filmic expressiveness and symbolism. Elaborated in this way, a Gestalt Filmology might be able to offer suggestions and correctives to an ‘embodied cognition’ and ‘neurofilmological’ approach in visual media studies. This open-access special issue of Cinéma & Cie connects together elements of Arnheim’s thought from different periods of his career. It bolsters Arnheimian ideas with research strains from general gestalt-theoretical psychology, and it brings elements …

CALL FOR PAPERS
N. 28/2022
Scadenza: 20 marzo 2022

Narrative Architectures: Bodies, Spaces, Technologies in Contemporary Media Experience

Imago. Studi di cinema e media No. 22/2020
edited by Enrico Carocci and Adriano D’Aloia

In which aspects and to what extent can one regard as “narrative” the spatial experience provided by a museum route, a urban building, a multimedia interactive environment, or an immersive videogame? Under which conditions may spatiality be constitutive of a narratively organized interactive experience? What are the relationships between a represented pictorial space and a designed material space, when their narrative roles are taken into account? And what are the socio-cultural or political implications of the mediated interactions between individuals and environments?

Taken together, the possible answers to such questions allow us to grasp some specific features of contemporary media experience, which is broadly characterized by a special emphasis on the articulations between bodily interactions, spatial constructs, and technological innervations. At the same time, the distinctive features of contemporary media experience – irrespective of whether …

Neurofilmology of the Moving Image. Gravity and Vertigo in Contemporary Cinema

A walk suspended in mid-air, a fall at breakneck speed towards a fatal impact with the ground, an upside-down flip into space, the drift of an astronaut in the void… Analysing a wide range of films, this book brings to light a series of recurrent aesthetic motifs through which contemporary cinema destabilizes and then restores the spectator’s sense of equilibrium. The ‘tensive motifs’ of acrobaticsfallimpactoverturning, and drif treflect our fears and dreams and offer embodiedforms of transcendence of the limits of our human condition along with an awareness of their insurmountable nature. Adopting the approach of ‘Neurofilmology’—an interdisciplinary method that puts Filmology, perceptual psychology, philosophy of mind, and cognitive neuroscience into dialogue—this book implements the paradigm of embodied cognition in a new ecological epistemology of the moving-image experience.

VR Storytelling: Potentials and Limitations of Virtual Reality Narratives

Cinergie. Il cinema e le altre arti No. 19/2021
edited by Simone Arcagni and Adriano D’Aloia

The monographic section of Cinergie. Il cinema e le altre arti issue #19, co-edited with Simone Arcagni, arises from a need that has becoming increasingly acute in the past few years, namely that of closely examining the modes, practices, strategies, and forms of storytelling used in the various forms and experiences of Virtual Reality (VR) entertainment.

The question that we asked ourselves, and thus also the field of analysis that we wanted to open focuses primarily on two elements: first, on if and how cinematic narration can exist in VR; second, on what paths the development of a form of storytelling not directly tied to cinematic language might take.

The question of cinematic VR production has been on the table for several years. This is due to the peculiarity of VR language which, …

Gestalt Filmology. Insights on Form and Embodiment in the Film Experience

A Cinéma&Cie open access special issue edited by Adriano D’Aloia (Università degli Studi di Bergamo) and Ian Verstegen (University of Pennsylvania)

Deadline for abstract proposals: September 5, 2021

An incipient neurofilmological turn in film and media studies promises to reframe the study of the film experience into a post-cognitive episteme that stresses the idea that the perception of visual and acoustic stimuli implies the activation of embodied forms of simulation. According to the “embodied simulation” hypothesis, the significance of the film experience emerges from the interactive mutuality of an agent (or organism) and environment, and perception evokes internal forms of action that support an empathic understanding of the character’s gestures, intentions, and emotions. These dynamics can be extended to the film’s low-level features (e.g. cinematography, camera movements, editing) and allow one to rethink the aesthetics of the film experience in the light of multimodal sensory perception.

Although the theoretical references …

Enactivism and Inactivism. Media, Migrations, and the Rhetoric of Empathy

11 Jun , 2021 Conferences,Ecology,Empathy,Virtual Reality

It is in the nature or media to provide mediation, that is, a paradoxical and oxymoronic experience that, simultaneously, grants access to inaccessible or distant worlds, and prevents us from its actual dangers; exposes to the thrill of strong emotions and protects from the physical injuries and psychical trauma that they would cause; allows us to meet and interact and yet keeps us at a distance, socially separate, as in the pandemic era we are facing right now.

With the advent of immersive digital media, this dynamic has become more evident. And in front of global crisis and issues, such as migration, media offer empathy as a way to fill the gap, a remedy to the lack of direct experience, allowing people to “share” such suffering. I would like to intervene on its general and generic meaning (putting oneself in the other’s shoes to understand him or her) as it is used to propel …

Pre-constituted panels proposal “ENACTIVE MEDIA”

Proponents: Enrico Carocci, Adriano D’Aloia and Francesco Parisi

The double pre-constituted panel aims to apply the emerging neo-cognitive approach of Enactivism to the field of media studies in order to explore the epistemological transition from a disembodied to an organism-environment imbricated and technologically-extended media experience.

Enactivism is a theoretical paradigm grounded on a phenomenological, pragmatist, and ecological approach to cognition and experience. It is based on the fundamental ideas that cognition emerges from the dynamic interaction between an organism and its environment (systematicity) and that perception is a kind of activity (performativity). Accordingly, Enactivism comprises a constellation of concepts that can be applied to and renew the study of the media experience and the mediatization of life as one of the main challenging …

Against interactivity

Interactive cinema is one of the most interesting areas of experimentation with storytelling form. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018), a stand-alone episode of the acclaimed British television series available on Netflix, has restarted the debate around this genre. My article Against interactivity. Phenomenological notes on Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (published in open access in Series) offers a discussion of several critical elements inherent to the experience of viewing Bandersnatch, specifically those related to its interactive, meta-reflexive, and ludic character. The tension between interactive and interpretative cooperation, between actuality and virtuality, between self-reflexivity and self-referentiality, between free choice and control, between co-authorship and authority, and between gaming and gambling, bring out the contradictions of a product characteristic of the current transmedial landscape.

Enactive Screens. The Moving-Body and the Moving-Image

On October 21, 2020 I will deliver a talk at the Cinema & Media Studies (online) Colloquium of the University of Philadelphia. In the talk “Enactive Screens. The Moving-Body and the Moving-Image” I will critically discuss the relevance of an enactive approach to human cognition for film and media studies. Rooted in J.J. Gibson’s ecological approach to visual perception and in Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, enactivism is an emerging perspective in cognitive science that promotes the idea that perception and action are fundamentally inseparable in lived cognition and that the latter emerges from the coupling of an organism with its environment. According to enactivists, “cognition depends on an experience that derives from having a body, with its various sensory-motor capacities [that] are themselves part of a wider biological, psychological, and cultural context” (Varela, Thompson, Rosch, The Embodied Mind, 1991). Since the interaction between an organism and its environment through the …

Immersive Stories. Virtual Reality, Post-Cinema and Storytelling

In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a new frontier of innovation and experimentation within what is known as “immersive entertainment” — gaming, art, museum exhibitions, TV and cinema. The proliferation on the market of new headsets (from the expensive HTC VIVE and Oculus to the popular Google Cardbox), the spread of platforms, apps and also VR cinemas around the world, and the inclusion of VR productions in international film festivals (e.g. Sundance, Tribeca, Venice) are trends demonstrating that VR is no longer just a fascinating 1980s-inspired literary or cinematic subject (from Tron to the Matrix trilogy, to the recent Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One). VR is also a new way of designing and creating an experience in which the spectator is more directly, immediately, and effectively involved and entertained through immersion and a strong sense of presence, i.e. the illusion of being part of an …

Deadline: 22 March 2020
Extended Deadline: 5 April 2020

Media have always been able to configure our sense of space. However, in recent years, technological development—which tends to affect the relationship between the individual and the environment more and more deeply—has been radically intensifying this process. More particularly, the spatial dimension has assumed a role of increasing importance in determining the subject’s activity and agency.

Two types of experiences appear particularly interesting in this regard. Those of the first type, which are more immediately relevant to the field of media studies, tend to delocalize the user in non-empirical worlds through the use of immersive devices. Virtual reality—in its varied range of applications and levels of interactivity, ranging from pure contemplation to videoludic interaction—is an effective example of such “heterotopic” spaces.…

Embodied time at the movies

As we exit a movie theatre after watching a film, we frequently have the impression that time flew or dragged by, or even that a single scene seemed to pass slower or faster than it actually did. Time perception at the cinema depends on a complex combination of several factors, both objective and subjective… But despite the complexity and apparent impenetrability of the matter, a research team of filmogists and psychologists led by Ruggero Eugeni (and of which I am part together with Stefania Balzarotti and Federica Cavaletti) conducted an empirical study on how film editing and type of the character’s actions affect the spectators’ time perception.

We called it #SEEM_IT “Subjective Experience and Estimation of Moving-Image Time” and a chapter included in a visionary book on The Extended Theory of Cognitive Creativity edited by Antonino Pennisi and Alessandra Falzone now presents and discusses the findings within the theoretical framework …

Even the students strike on global climate crisis we have bumped into this morning seemed integral part of the conference and of a broader rethinking of the interaction between our body and the environment (which is the heart of enaction).

And eventually I crossed the Strait of Messina by ferry and visually and bodily understood that it is not at a separation between strips of land, but a natural and spiritual link (that cannot be replaced by a physical bridge in any way).

Enactivism is an emerging perspective in cognitive science that promotes the idea that perception and action are fundamentally inseparable in lived cognition. According to enactivists, “cognition depends on an experience that derives from having a body, with its various sensory-motor capacities [that] are themselves part of a wider biological, psychological, and …

Nell’occasione presenterò alcuni risultati della ricerca SEEM-IT: Subjective Experience and Estimation of the Moving-Image Time realizzata assieme al gruppo di ricerca del progetto PRIN “Perception, Performativity and Cognitive Sciences”.

Eco-phenomenology of fashion films

“Visible and mobile, my body is a thing among things; it is one of them. It is caught in the fabric of the world, and its cohesion is that of a thing. But because it sees and moves itself, it holds things in a circle arounditself. Things are an annex or prolongation of my body; they are incrusted in its flesh, they are part of its full definition; the world is made of the very stuff of the body.” (Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Eye and Mind, 1964).

In the paper I am delivering at ZoneMode Conference 2019 on “Be cool! Aesthetic Imperatives and Social Practices”, held at the Rimini campus of the Università di Bologna on May 16-18, I adopts an ecological and phenomenological approach to human perception and experience in order to (re)discuss the relevance and the characteristics of fashion in the contemporary media ecosystem. Street fashion photography

Come viene realizzato?

Fashion is the medium

Underwater Virtual Reality

Underwater Virtual Reality VR experience relies on a multimodal stimulation which goes far beyond audio-visual perception and involves also the senes of touch, prorpioception, thermoception, and equilibrioception Notions such as presence, empathy, and immersion – which are usually employed to describe immersion in the theatrical film experience – acquire an almost literal sense in VR, whose medium technology enhances (yet sometimes interferes with) the user’s psychic and physical agency and creates a multi-sensory experience. In this paper presented at the XXIV International Film Studies Conference From Spectacle to Entertainment Cinema, Media and Modes of Engagement from Modernity to the Present at Roma Tre University from November 21 to 23,) I take neo-cognitive epistemological tools and critically analyze and discuss a radical case of VR immersivity for entertainment: the use of VR headset set underwater. Virtually Present, Physically Invisible

The freezing cement stings my heels while, in total solitude, I find myself looking at a pair of sneakers, abandoned beneath a shiny metal bench. The bench sits against the wall of a tight and low space, almost like a container, which is illuminated by a cold, hissing neon light. They are a child’s shoes, thrown in a messy heap of other old shoes, covered with dust and abandoned in this space of suspension and waiting, the first direct reference to the hopeful yet desperate journey undertaken by many migrants across the border between Mexico and the United States, which I too, in a way, am experiencing. I too wait barefoot, in the reconstruction of a hielera in which the police have kept the migrants cramped up for days, for a red light and a siren that will tell me to go through a door. Once I pass the threshold, …

Immersive Entertainment. Cinema and Virtual Reality

In recent years, virtual reality (VR) is emerging as a new frontier of innovation and experimentation in many fields and activities – medicine, enginering, military, marketing and also within so-called “immersive entertainment” – gaming, art, museum exhibition, and cinema. New headsets are placed on the market (from expensive Oculus Rift to the popular Google Cardbox); VR cinemas are spreading around the world and international festivals now host VR productions (Sundance, Tribeca, Cannes, Venice). VR is no longer just a fascinating 1990s-wave literary or cinematic subject (from Torn to the Matrix trilogy, to Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One), but also a new way of planning and creating an experience in which the spectator’s is more directly, immeditely and effectively involved and entertained through immersionand a strong sense of presence, that is the unperceived illusionto be part of an alternative world. VR has an effective capability to enter-tain the user, that is …

Virtualmente presente, fisicamente invisibile

The Perfection Series, or why I can’t stop watching the Miracle Blade infomercial

I have always been fascinated by the “Miracle Blade” infomercial, in which Chef Tony demonstrates the miraculous powers of a series of kitchen knives. I used to watch it on the Italian television local channels endlessly… And I have always dreamt of studying the nature of such a fascinating experience. That’s what I will try to do at the 23rd SERCIA Conference “That’s Entertainment!”. Spectacle, Amusement, Audience and the Culture of Recreation in the Audiovisual Contexts of English-speaking countries, held at the University of Bologna. In my paper The Perfection Series. Informercial demonstrations as entertainment programs, I analyze the informercial genre – a misunderstood and under-researched form of television – in terms of semiotic strategies and stylistic aspects, but I also suggest that my unavoidable desire to watch is due at least to two kind of psychological and anthropological-based “appeals”, the technical appeal and the magical appeal

Perception, Performativity and Cognitive Sciences

The aim of this research project Perception, Performativity and Cognitive Sciences, founded by the Italian Government (PRIN 2015), is to focus on (and test) the hypothesis that performativity is not a property confined to certain specific human skills, or to certain specific acts of language, nor an accidental enrichment due to creative intelligence. Instead, the executive and motor component of cognitive behavior should be considered an intrinsic part of the physiological functioning of the mind and as endowed with self-generative power. It is thought to have evolutionarily developed in close correlation with processes of natural selection leading, in the human animal, on the one hand, to the species specificity of articulate speech and, on the other, to embodied simulation as a model of perception. In this perspective, cognition is considered a mediated form of action rather than a relationship between inner thought and behavior occurring in the outside world. …

Fashionating Images. Audiovisual media studies meet Fashion

This CS Journal special issue (No. 1/2017) aims at exploring the encounter and intersection between fashion studies and media studies, with particular reference to visual and audiovisual products, e.g. cinema, television, advertising and digital media. Over the past decades, fashion acquired centrality in social and economical dynamics in Western culture for its capability to penetrate and influence both production and identitarian practices. Fashion both fully takes part in artistic processes as an autonomous aesthetic and semantic object (fashion as a medium) and has a pivotal role in creative industry as a provider of fundamental material for the formation of imaginary worlds and characters (fashion as a media industry). At the same time fashion has established as an autonomous and institutionalized social field able to influence and shape contemporary culture.

Comunicazioni Sociali. Journal of Media, Performing Arts and Cultural Studies No. 1/2016

The Photographic Experience in the Post-Medium Age (No. 1/2016, edited by Adriano D’Aloia and Francesco Parisi). For a long time, the study of photography has been a part of Art studies or a mere object of philosophical investigations. Yet, after the advent of digital technologies it progressively became central in Media and Communication studies. From the 2000s onwards, various social and technological events made photography more accessible, ubiquitous, public, cheap, democratic, immediate and shared than ever before, paving the way to a renewal of photographic experience. New objects, formats, devices, practices and uses emerged as specific traits of a ‘performative’ photographic agency. This emergence is allowed by …

Neurofilmology. Audiovisual Studies and the Challenge of Neuroscience

Cinéma & Cie. International Film Studies Journal No. 22-23/2014
edited by Adriano D’Aloia and Ruggero Eugeni

Over the last two decades, discoveries made in the field of cognitive neuroscience have begun to permeate the humanities and social sciences. In the context of this intersection, Neurofilmology is a research program that arises at the encounter between two models of viewer: the viewer-as-mind (deriving from a cognitive/analytical approach) and the viewer-as-body (typical of the phenomenological/continental approach). Accordingly, Neurofilmology focuses on the viewer-as-organism, by investigating with both empirical and speculative epistemological tools the subject of audiovisual experience, postulated as embodied, embedded, enacted, extended, emerging, affective, and relational.

The special issue 22/23 of Cinéma & Cie, edited by Adriano D’Aloia and Ruggero Eugeni, focuses on major conceptual and epistemological arguments arising from the dialogue between audiovisual studies and neurosciences developed over the last twenty years. In fact, the contributors …

CALL FOR PAPERS

The contemporary mediascape is characterized by continuous and endless remediation flows that re-shape and hybridize the contents, the forms and the vehicles of visual-based media experience. In such a scenario, over the last years photography has gained a central role in negotiating between the need for innovation propelled by digital media and the persistence of its original nature and purposes. On the one hand, the advent of photo-sharing websites and social networks, photography apps for mobile devices, portable hybrid devices for photo and video (e.g. GoPro), set the field for the emergence of new experimental and non-professional media practices that have progressively reshaped the spatiotemporal and sociocultural boundaries of the photographic image. The recent development of photographic devices, technologies and practices created a backfire effect on institutional forms of photographic communication (e.g. photojournalism, auteur photography, art exhibition, …

Keira’s Kiss

Though intimacy has been a wide concern in the humanities, it has received little critical attention in film studies. The book Intimacy in Cinema. Critical Essays on English Language Films, edited by David Roche and Isabelle Schmitt-Pitiot and published by McFarland, investigates both the potential intimacy of cinema as a medium and the possibility of a cinema of intimacy where it is least expected.

As a notion defined by binaries—inside and outside, surface and depth, public and private, self and other—intimacy, because it implies sharing, calls into question the boundaries between these extremes, and the border separating mainstream cinema and independent or auteur cinema. Following on Thomas Elsaesser’s theories of the relationship between the intimacy of cinema and the cinema of intimacy, the essays explore intimacy in silent and classic Hollywood movies, underground, documentary and animation films; and contemporary Hollywood, British, Canadian and Australian cinema from a variety of …

Reflecting on creativity has been central to a great deal of philosophical speculation, production practices and forms of reception of the artistic experience. Notions of creation and creativity concern crucial elements in media industries. Moreover, recent developments in institutional policies refer to the pivotal role of creativity in evaluating and promoting cultural production (see the EC’s most recent cultural program “Creative Europe”).

The 2014 NECS Conference, held in Milan, aims to revise and challenge assumptions on media creation and creativity, by looking at them as discursive formations, sociability instruments, power networks, modes of production and reception undergoing historical, political, theoretical and technological transformations.

La vertigine e il volo. L’esperienza filmica fra estetica e neuroscienze cognitive

Call for Essays [pdf]

Over the last two decades, discoveries made in the field of cognitive neuroscience have begun to permeate the humanities and social sciences. In particular, the philosophical and psychological implications of the function of so-called ‘visuomotor neurons’ have caused a breakthrough in the understanding of the mind-body relation and of phenomena such as human consciousness, empathy, intersubjectivity, affect, and aesthetic response to works of art. This special issue of Cinéma&Cie aims to evaluate, from a multidisciplinary and critical perspective, both the relevance of the neurological approach for the psychology and the aesthetics of the film experience and, more generally, the epistemological consequences of this approach in the humanities.

The fundamental (and controversial) insight behind neuroscientific findings is that the complex processes of the …

I am attending the Film-Philosophy Conference 2013: Beyond Film, hosted by the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (Universiteit van Amsterdam) and the EYE Film Institute Netherlands. My paper Canonical cinema. Affordance and Embodied Simulation in the Film Experience aims to evaluate the relevance of the notion of affordance in the neurophenomenological approach to the film experience, with a particular focus on the role of so-called visuomotor neurons. In what sense the film spectator grasps the filmic objects by experiencing the characters’ physical and psychic activity? As grasping the filmic objects, I mean both – literally – the spectator’s simulation of the character’s physical action executed in order to grasp an object in the fictional environment and – figuratively – the spectator’s immediate, prereflexive, empathetic understanding of the meaning of the film characters’ actions, intentions and emotions via a kind of simulation rooted in the body. My idea is …

Figure dell’acqua

The Impact Factor

I am attending The NECS 2013 Conference on “Media Politics ‒ Political Media” at Charles University, Prague. My paper – The impact factor. Politics of cinematic representability of violent events – describes the ways in which the film spectator experiences physically and psychically the cinematic representation of falling human bodies in mainstream films, with particular regard to the culmination of this movement: the impact with the ground. Contemporary cinema, in fact, uses an invariable and cross-genre aesthetic politics: the impact is not explicitly shown on screen because of both its psycho-physiological violence and its controversial socio-political implications, especially in the post-11/9 era. As the series of examples that I analyse demonstrates, cinema employs a series of stylistic strategies – ‘replacement’, ‘obscuration’, ‘diversion’, ‘interposition’ – intended to represent the unrepresentable (Baudrillard, Didi-Huberman). To explain how these strategies operate and to evaluate their relevance in the theoretical paradigm of film-embodiment

Media studies have been forced by convergence, digitization and globalization to look beyond the traditional structure of national media systems, histories and habits, and to begin to analyse their phenomena according to a wider, and more complex, point of view. On one side, they have started to reconstruct the global flows of information and entertainment, the basis of a “mainstream culture” that unifies – at least partially – different geographical, political, social and cultural areas. On the other, they have begun to follow media products and trends in their complex paths across various countries and macro-regions, underlining both the differences and the deep similarities in shapes and meanings, in production processes as well as in consumption practices. Especially in the field of television and sound studies, in recent years, some progresses have …

The Edge of Love
(John Maybury, 2008)

In the Editorial of the new issue of Cinema: Journal of Philosophy and the Moving Image (No. 3/2012 on ‘Embodiment and the body’), editor Patrícia Silveirinha Castello Branco writes that my essay Upside-Down Cinema: (Dis)simulation of the Body in the Film Experience “focuses on the disruptive powers of cinematic experience”, for its underlying the use of visual excess “in practices that aim to explore the role of the senses and of the body, not as a place for amusement and diversion, but quite on the contrary: as a place of resistance to the dominance of rational/verbal based social order and scientific and capitalistic ordering of the self. I am not sure that the dynamic between disembodiment (that is, the thrill of ‘perceptual disorder’ in the film experience) and re-embodiment (the re-establishing of a comprehensible ‘reading direction’) should be interpreted as a critical stance on mainstream narrative cinema. My essay, however, examines …

My essay Film in Depth. Water and Immersivity in the Contemporary Film Experience has just been published in Acta Universitatis Sapientiae – Film and Media Studies, the international scientific journal of Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania. In this essay I argue that since its beginnings, cinema has recognised that water can visually give matter and meaning to human desires, dreams and secrets, eliciting suspense and fear. Using different aesthetical and technical strategies, contemporary cinema shows immersed and drowning bodies to represent and express intimacy and protection, suspense and fear, obsession and depression, state of shock, past or infancy trauma, hallucinations and nightmares, etc. The case of enwaterment (i.e. “waterembodiment”) is significant because of …

The intangible ground

Tangibility is a key factor in our contemporary relationship with media – it is also the thematic focus of a special section in issue #2 of NECSUS – European Journal of Media Studies. In my essay The intangible ground: A neurophenomenology of the film experience I argue that the activity of ‘visuomotor neurons’ can be thought of as the very core process of film ‘viewing’ as an experience of tangibility. By tangibility, I mean the spectator’s opportunity to touch and grasp the objects that are touched and grasped by the character; and, in a more general sense, her/his impression of being grounded on a supporting surface, as the characters are. In order to explore such grasping and grounding, I propose a counterintuitive approach – i.e., to analyse what happens when tactile sensoriality is not fully applicable and gravity is not valid in the fictional environment, such as …

The conference title is Cinema of Intimacy and/or the Intimacy of Cinema. In the presentation text, organizers states that “Unlike literary studies, film studies have rarely focused directly on intimacy as such … and English-speaking cinema might itself seem an unlikely candidate for this topic. Most film scholars and critics have tackled the question indirectly, by studying, for instance, the representation of the family or specific genres such as the biopic in which private lives occupy center stage. And yet as a photographic and aural medium that enables us to see and hear the bodies of actors, cinema is very much based on intimacy, although perhaps intimacy of a different nature from the kind literary scholars examine when studying letters and diaries …

Spaghetti TV Crime Fiction

This week In Media Res casts a glance at the most interesting phenomena on Italian television. The framework of “convergence” will be the leitmotif. Through the presented cases, a more complex image of Italian TV will emerge, where traditional elements (as references to conventional genres) and new innovations (as creative use of online media) are now firmly bound together.

In my post, I briefly present the case of  Romanzo Criminale  la serie, the story of the rise and fall of the Banda della Magliana, aired on Italian television in 2008-2010. Romanzo  has attracted the attention of Italian critics as being the most innovative series ever in terms of style and inspiration. I propose the idea that Romanzo  is the gravitational body of a constellation of films and tv series (e.g. Vallanzasca and Faccia d’angelo) which opened a new genre: “spaghetti crime fiction”.…

Sonoluminescence (literally ‘light from sound’) is a phenomenon caused when ultrasound waves excite a liquid, creating tiny bubbles which emit light when they collapse. It was first discovered by scientists who were attempting to accelerate the process of developing photos, in the early 1930s.

My essay On Icarus’ Wings. The Cinematic Experience of Falling Bodies has been published in issue 4 of Czech journal Iluminace – The Journal of Film Theory, History and Aesthetics. The essay describes the ways in which the film spectator experiences physically and psychically the cinematic representation of falling human bodies, with particular regard to the culmination of this movement: the impact. The latter is usually not shown on screen because of its psycho-physiological ‘violence’. Cinema employs a series of stylistic strategies – ‘replacement’, ‘obscuration’, ‘diversion’, ‘interposition’ intended to represent the unrepresentable. To explain how these strategies operate, I draw upon both recent neurocognitive experiments and classic experimental psychology demonstrations on visual occlusion and evaluate their implications for film aesthetics. The essay concludes with a brief analysis of a short film on 9/11 by A. G. Iñàrritu in order to illuminate the bond forged between the aforementioned strategies …

“With Adriano D’Aloia’s essay we shift locations once again, from the home, art spaces and the Internet to health spas. The example of moving image installations in Italian Spa’s is used to provide an original examination of what Casetti has called the relocated filmic experience. Just as Ng re-examined interactivity, so D’Aloia re-visits scholarly work on immersion and, to a lesser extent, absorption. The moving image installations he explores act as a hinge that joins the classical viewing experience in a movie theatre with the relocated experience outside of that familiar space. More importantly, D’Aloia argues, “the spa moving image experience helps us to reframe both the theatrical and relocated dimensions of the …

Here is an excerpt from my essay on the cinematic experience of falling bodies on which I’m working on for publication in an international film studies journal.

The case of Alejandro Gonzalez Iñàrritu’s short film in the collective work 11’09’’01 – September 11 (Canada 2002) is extremely interesting, since the impact with the ground of the falling bodies is not represented at all and since the black screen is used to partially obscure the movement that precedes the impact, which is, therefore, only evoked as the dramatic and inevitable ending of the falls. The black screen represents a darkening of both the visual field and consciousness. The sight at a distance of desperate, defenceless falling bodies is immediately and emphatically experienced by the spectator because of the precarious nature of its representability. The unwatchable, the unbearable, the unrepresentable is embodied in the ‘blind’ gaze offered by the black screen. …

I will attend the Fourth Annual Conference of Film and Philosophy, organized by Film-Philosophy journal at the Liverpool John Moores University on July 6th-8th. In my presentation Upside-Down Cinema: Strategies of Dissimulation of the Film-Body I will argue that the upside-down representation of the human body (especially the face) in cinema produces a crisis in the system of the viewer’s bodily orientation, which is instead constructed on the natural, gravitational axis. When the balance based on gravity is compromised, the perceptual and the cognitive frames to which the viewer unconsciously recurs collide with each other and generate a bias. Cinema usually provides itself a “normalization” of the perceptual axis by means of a violation of the physical laws, e.g. showing in the canonic orientation the upside-down body of the character (e.g. Chaplin on the airplane in his The Great Dictator, 1940) or …

Cinematic Empathies

I wrote one of the chapter (‘Cinematic Empathies. Spectator involvement in the film experience’) of the book Kinesthetic Empathy in Creative and Cultural Practices, edited by Dee Reynolds (The University of Manchester) and Matthew Reason (The University of York). The aim of my chapter is to bring to light the central role of empathy in spectators’ involvement in narrative fiction film. I recall some of the main contributions of film theorists of the 1920s and 1930s (Freeburg, Epstein, Balázs, Arnheim, Eisenstein), with the aim of demonstrating that empathy is inherent in the nature of narrative cinema itself and is pivotal to describing the variety and complexity of film spectatorship as an intensified experience involving the film’s body and the spectator’s body.

Arnheim, Gestalt and Media

Concentric Relocation

I will attend the conference Networking Images. Approches Interdisciplinaires de la notion de réseaux, held at the Institut de recherche sur le cinéma et l’audiovisuel (IRCAV) of the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3 on March 17th-18th. In my paper Stream Flux Flow. Concentric relocation of the film experience I will argue that a film can be watched in various places, in various individual and interpersonal contexts, and by means of various devices and screens. However, this process does not simply concern the locations where films are viewed, nor the aesthetic or textual characteristics of films, nor the technical platforms of film delivery. Rather, relocation is the “displacement” of the experience (Francesco Casetti): a corpus of social and cultural needs, rules and pleasures that arose with the advent of cinema, developed as it evolved, and are still present today in the “expanded cinematic practices”. Assuming this perspective, …

The Semiotics of Video Games

My essay Adamant Bodies. The Avatar-Body and the Problem of Autoempathy has ispired one of the themes of Chistophe Bruchansky and Mathias Jansson online exibition The Semiotics of Video Games, realized starting from some suggestions of E|C, No. 5, “Computer Games between Text and Practice” (edited in 2009 by Dario Compagno and Patrick J. Coppock). The Semiotics of Video Games is a miscellany that investigates the production of meaning in videogames and “wants to uncover the ambiguous interdependence that exist between our everyday cultural reality and the rhetoric manifesting itself in video games”. In Theme 1: Avatars and Empathy in video games, Kei Houraku’s Gomba’s lifetime (2007) and Brody Condon’s KarmaPhysics < Elvis (2004) videos are cited as examples in order to discuss the role of empathy in video gaming practice.

Rudolf Arnheim for Film and Media Studies

A new interesting book on Arnheim from Routledge. Rudolf Arnheim (1904-2007) was a pioneering figure in film studies, best known for his landmark book on silent cinema Film as Art. He ultimately became more famous as a scholar in the fields of art and art history, largely abandoning his theoretical work on cinema. However, his later aesthetic theories on form, perception and emotion should play an important role in contemporary film and media studies. In this enlightening new volume in the AFI Film Readers series, an international group of leading scholars revisits Arnheim’s legacy for film and media studies. In fourteen essays, the contributors bring Arnheim’s later work on the visual arts to bear on film and media, while also reassessing the implications of his film theory to help refine our grasp of Film as Art and related texts. The contributors discuss a broad range topics including Arnheim’s film writings …

My paper on Edith Stein’s theory on empathy and its pertinence in both film theory and film experience has been published in the montage AV issue on “Erfahrung”.

The book is related to the Kinesthetic Empathy: Concepts and Contexts, organized by The Watching Dance Project team and held at University of Manchester on 22-23 April 2010. The conference aimed to “bring together researchers and practitioners in fields including neuroscience, dance, film, music, and contemporary embodied practices, to explore the nature and role of kinesthetic empathy. NOTA BENE: This is a draft paper for discussion. It should not be quoted, cited or reproduced.

LAST UPDATE: September 21, 2010

One of the aim of my current research is to sketch an agenda for a philematology of moving images. Philematology (from philema, the Greek for “kiss”) is the science or the art of kissing, “founded” in 2009 by neuroscientist Wendy Hill of Lafayette College, biologist Helen Fisher of Rutgers University, and psychologist Gordon Gallup Jr. of the University of Albany. Their experiments and books are revealing hidden complexities behind this simple human interaction act. A kiss may trigger a cascade of neural messages and chemicals that transmit tactile sensations, sexual excitement, feelings of closeness, motivation and even euphoria. Once again, the dynamics of human interaction are explained recurring to basic neuro-physiological process. Think of the mirror neurons mechanism: the subject internally reproduces a directed or …

The (Video)Art of Kissing

I am attending the Film Summer School “Cinéma & Art Contemporain 3 / Cinema & Contemporary Art 3“, hosted by the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3 from June 28th to July 9th 2010. My paper continues the reflections I started at CUNY in New York City on a philematology of moving images, that is, the science or the art of experiencing a cinematic kiss. By adopting both an aesthetic and an experimental-psychological perspective, I take into consideration a corpus of significant recent video artworks and I analyze the modalities in which the spectator experiences the sensuous sense of the kiss. The figures of the shadow, the veil, and the glass as surfaces of mediation between the kissers reveal an intimate implication between contact and separation, visibility and invisibility, transparency and opacity, private and public dimension.

Before the lips touch

The moment just before a kiss between two film characters is a climax of strong sensual elicitation and erotic condensation. At a narrative level, the kiss has both a transformative role (rebirth, reawakening, betrayal) and a resolutive role (completion, conquest, farewell). Let us concentrate on the perceptual/cognitive/emotional functions of the filmic kiss as an (em)pathetic elicitor of the spectator experience. Adopting a phenomenological approach, I am trying to focus on the moments that precede and prepare the encounter of the lips, and to argue that kissing scenes are used as a strategy of desire loading. Such a strategy is constructed upon a complex and composite progressive engagement that is both physiological and psychological: reduction of physical distance, organization of gaze trajectories, delay, and hesitation. In kissing scenes, individual body parts (eyes, lips, tongue, nose, head, neck, hands) act as corporeal characters in an autonomous micro-narrative structure based on the …

Working hard on a paper on the querelle between Theodor Lipps and Edith Stein on the relationship between the acrobat and the spectator…

Suddenly, in the core of Edith Stein’s Zum Problem der Einfühlung (1917), the figures of both the acrobat and the spectator crop out. The young phenomenologist is discussing Theodor Lipps’s notion of Einfühlung and “internal imitation” [Nachahmungtheorie] in her doctoral dissertation: Einfühlung is a kind of act in which one “gets” the Other’s Erlebniss on the basis of psycho-physical and spiritual analogy. In his Grundlegung der Aesthetik, Lipps states that when the spectator is watching an acrobat walking on a suspended wire, he or she feels him/herself so inside the acrobat [ich fühle mich so in ihm] (1903), that his/her conscious self has sunk itself completely into that of the acrobat. On the contrary, Stein argues that Einfühlung is far from being a mere projective

Falling Girl

“Falling Girl is an immersive interactive narrative installation that allows the viewer to participate in the story of a young girl falling from a skyscraper. During her miraculously slow descent, the girl reacts to the people and events in each window. Daylight fades, night falls and passes, and at dawn, when the falling girl finally lands on the sidewalk, she is an aged woman who bears no resemblance to the young girl who started her fall a few minutes before.

Cameras situated in the room and connected to computer incorporate images of viewers themselves that appear in the apartments that the falling girl passes. These are juxtaposed with the ever present central image of the girl in silhouette falling slowly along the skyscraper’s side as she gets older and older. In this way, viewers participate in this …

— Oh? What’s empathicalism?
— The most sensible approach to true understanding and peace of mind.
— Sounds great, but what is it?
— It’s based on empathy. Do you know what the word “empathy” means?
— No, I’ll have to have the beginner’s course on that one. Empathy. Is it something like sympathy?
— Oh, it goes beyond sympathy. Sympathy is to understand what someone feels. Empathy is to project your imagination so that you actually feel what the other person is feeling. You put yourself in the other person’s place. Do I make myself clear?

I am presenting a draft of the first step of my investigation on drowning bodies and cinematic experience at the Emergent Encounters in Film Theory. Intersections between Psychoanalysis and Philosophy international film studies conference, hosted by the King’s College Film Studies Deparment in London on the 21st of March.

Keynote Speakers: Steven Shaviro (Wayne State University), Vicky Lebeau (University of Sussex)

Interdisciplinary approaches to the theoretical discussion of the cinematic medium have often engaged with philosophical or psychoanalytic perspectives. While philosophy and psychoanalysis are by no means opposed schools of thought, the potential to develop new ways of understanding film remains an opportunity to be explored. In seeking out further lines of enquiry, the study of intersections between cinema/philosophy/psychoanalysis, seems most pertinent to our generation of ‘film thinking’, to invoke Daniel Frampton’s concept of the ‘film mind’, whose future still stands, to some extent, in the shadow of psychoanalysis. Recent philosophical models …

Drowning Bodies

And what about drowning? Cinema has immediately recognized that water could visually represent the substance of human dreams and desires. Water can connect or separate conscious and onyric worlds, arousing the spectators’ actual response (lack of breath, sense of choking, menace…). I’d like to figure out if and how the representation of drowning body in contemporary cinema could be a strategy to engage a corporeal relation with the spectator’s psychic dimension, in terms of 1) depth: from the reflective and narcisist surface to the dark profundity; 2) consistency: from the transparent swimming-pool to the opaque and cloudy lake; 3) expressive forces: from the quite, though threatening, ocean to the impetuous river. Here you have a collection of snapeshots captured from “water-based” movie (What Lies Beneath, The Sphere, Jaws, Minority Report, The Hours…).

Genealogy of Fall

Genealogy of Fall

My hypothesis is that along the history of images a series of specific and recurrent “experiential figures” have arisen that have proved to be a functional way to set up the psychological relation between images and observers. In order to study the perceptual-emotional-cognitive relationship between the spectator and the images, we can take into account the fall of human body since it is particularly interesting for its philosophical significance and its capability to engage a corporeal relation with the spectator. I wonder if a good way of studying the nature of this double corpor(e)ality – the representational and the spectatorial one – should be investigating its historical origin, that is its genealogy in the history of visual culture. In the history of art, the genealogy of the figure of fall probably starts with the visual representation of the fall of Lucifero (the fallen angel) and Icaro (the fallen God).

Falling Bodies in Cinema

In the latest months I have been trying to figure out how cinema represents the falling of human bodies. My idea is that the representation of fall leads to a peculiar kind of relation between images and spectators. On the basis of neural specularity (mirror neurons), we are able to directly feel an empathetic relation with falling bodies, as if we were those very bodies that are falling. The spectator’s corporality is involed in viewing of such images. But how? – that’s the question. Probably the spectator is involved in a wide range of engagements, concerning perceptual, cognitive and emotional patterns. Just to give you an overlook on the topic, I edited this short (and funny) video:
