Among the media of contemporary entertainment, Virtual Reality is gaining ground as a creative and innovative form of engagement of the post-cinematic spectatorin an intimate relationship with both fictional or non-fictional worlds. VR experience relies on a multimodal stimulation which goes far beyond audio-visual perceptionand involves also the senes of touch, prorpioception, thermoception, and the vestibular sense. Notions such as presence, empathy, and immersion– which are usually employed to describe immersion in the theatrical film experience – acquire an almostliteral sense in VR, whose medium technology enhances (yet sometimes interferes with) theuser’s psychic and physicalagency andcreatesa multi-sensory experience.
